Vince Lombardi – Motivator

By Wayland Royce

Lombardi took a team that had a losing record in the ten years before his arrival and took most of the players that played the 1-10-1season before he arrived and took them to 7-5-0 record his first year. And on to a career record of 105-35-6 (regular and postseason combined), 98-30-4 in Green Bay. No other professional football coach has a record that comes close. I believe this happened because he was able through excellent motivational skills to help his players play at their very best. As a young sales engineer I watched a training/motivational film starring the famous coach of the Green Bay Packers, Vince Lombardi. The film was called The Second Effort. As I remember the film, a young salesman played by Ron Masak comes in to sell something Coach Lombardi really needs and is intimidated by Lombardi’s brush off. As the young salesman starts to leave with his tail between his legs, Coach calls him back and asks “why do you think Jerry Kramer is so successful on the field?”

“Why?” asks the salesman with great interest. Coach Lombardi then shows him a little game footage of Kramer going for the second effort. Then he called Kramer in to explain the importance of making the second effort. Coach then challenges the salesman to give always give it a second effort. The salesman did the old Colombo trick of starting to leave then turning around and making the second effort presentation.

Lombardi was a legendary motivator as evidenced by his great and often misquoted Number One Speech. The words really go like this “”Winning is not a sometime thing; it’s an all the time thing. You don’t win once in a while; you don’t do things right once in a while; you do them right all the time. Winning is a habit. Unfortunately, so is losing.

“There is no room for second place. There is only one place in my game, and that’s first place. I have finished second twice in my time at Green Bay, and I don’t ever want to finish second again. There is a second place bowl game, but it is a game for losers played by losers. It is and always has been an American zeal to be first in anything we do, and to win, and to win, and to win.”

Lombardi’s words are just a inspiring today as they were forty years ago. Making the second effort is always worth doing.
